The exterior has the largest dome of its kind, and has vast expanses of marble from Italy, China, France - and no doubt lots of other places too. The late Sheikh Zayed, ruler of United Arab Emirates since its formation in 1971 until his death in 2004, started work on the Mosque in the late 1980s but never saw it open. It is now in use for worship(it can accomodate around 7,000 faithful inside, plus another 22,000 in the main courtyard outside), but there is still building work ongoing to finish exterior landscaping, car parks etc. There is also a mausoleum containing Sheikh Zayed's remains and this is the only area of the mosque where photography is not welcomed. This is a place of worship and the mosque is closed to non-Muslim visitors on Fridays. It is open to visitors from 09:00 to 12:00 noon and there is a free guided tour at 10:00 am from Sundays to Thursdays. There is a dress code requiring modest dress for men and women - no shorts and long sleeves. Ladies will be given an abaya & head scarf to wear. Taxi fare from the Corniche about 35 AED plus waiting time. A public bus service operates to the mosque from different parts of the city and costs 1 AED. Some hotels offer a free shuttle bus (including the Shangri La Hotel and InterContinental Hotel). This is must-see attraction in Abu Dhabi. Costing an estimated $500m to build, this is first and foremost a place of worship - it just happens to be on an awesome scale, with amazing attention to detail everywhere.
